During the summer we spend more time outdoors, drink cold drinks to cool off and spend more time in the air conditioning. These are just a few factors why we shouldn't neglect our immune system during the hottest season of the year, because we're not exempt from catching a cold, the flu or any other ailment.

Don't worry, there are plenty of ways to keep your body in shape! Here are some tips for a strong immune system during the warmer months.

        1. Be a sports fan

By exercising, blood circulation improves and inhibits the release of stress-related hormones, contributing to a healthy immune system. For the elderly, at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week and two days of muscle-strengthening activities are recommended. People who lead a sedentary lifestyle are much more likely to catch the flu and other viruses.

        2. Get enough sleep

How much and how well we sleep contributes to a stable immune system. We know that this isn't always possible in the summer, but we recommend between seven and eight hours of sleep in order to get the body properly rested, preventing the onset of fatigue, tiredness and contributing to better brain function, concentration and memory retention.

        3. Consume astaxanthin

This oxidiser is capable of boosting the immune system not just in summerbut all year round. Its effectiveness is so significant that it also acts on various parts of the body, such as slowing down skin ageing, improving resistance to ultraviolet radiation, glycaemic control, reducing fatigue, etc.

        4. Maintain a balanced diet

Having an unbalanced diet or being overweight are factors that lead to a weakened immune system, as well as other problems such as diabetes, heart disease and loss of muscle mass. It's very important to consume the nutrients that are essential for the body to function properly on a daily basis: fruit, vegetables, lean meats, among others.

        5. Enjoy the sunshine

Vitamin D helps the immune system fight infections. Its deficiency can cause body aches, hormonal problems, muscle weakness and much more. In addition to sunlight, we can also ingest vitamin D consuming mushrooms and egg yolk.

         6. Vitamin C

Ingesting vitamin C prevents infections and can even reduce their severity and duration. Among the foods with the highest levels of this vitamin are oranges, acerola, rose hips, chilli peppers, cabbage, papaya, strawberries, cauliflower, mangoes and many others.

         7. Constant hydration

Hydration favours the elimination of toxins from the body. To achieve a strong immune system, make water your new best friend. For those who don't like to drink water every day, we recommend adding a slice of orange or lemon for a touch of flavour. Remember, dehydration leads to health problems and weakens the immune system.
