Our gastrointestinal mucosa is constantly exposed to reactive oxygen species (ROS) due to the presence of bacteria and other infectious pathogens in food, as well as alcohol consumption, smoking and the stress we are subjected to in our daily lives, which are responsible for causing oxidative stress in our cells. Excessive and prolonged oxidative stress and inflammation are two of the main risk factors inherent in gastrointestinal disorders.
Lee, J. et al analysed the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential of Astaxanthin in models in vitro experimental gastrointestinal diseases. Astaxanthin has been shown to have protective effects against gastrointestinal diseases through multiple mechanisms. Residing on the surface and inside cell membranes, Astaxanthin directly neutralises ROS and lipid peroxyl radicals, increases the activity of antioxidant enzymes and suppresses pro-inflammatory transcription factors and cytokines.
