Physical exercise, oxidative stress and Astaxanthin

        by Beatriz Leite

        🏷️ Antioxidants 🏷️ Astaxanthin 🏷️ Healthy Living

A study by Djordjevic B. (2012) found that daily astaxanthin supplementation in young individuals who practised daily physical activity resulted in a reduction in markers of muscle damage and oxidative stress after training.

Thirty-two male football players were randomly selected to take part in the study and after 90 days it was found that the astaxanthin supplementation can prevent exercise-induced free radical production and the depletion of the group's non-enzymatic antioxidant defence.

        What is oxidative stress?

The uncontrolled production of free radicals and the lack of antioxidants to neutralise them damage molecules and alter cellular processes, which can lead to serious diseases such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's.

        Causes of cell oxidation

The overproduction of free radicals causes cellular oxidation due to a lack of antioxidants in the body. This process is more common in sportspeople, people with a diet low in antioxidants and environmental factors.

        Sport

Excessive or high-intensity exercise makes the body need more energy and therefore more oxygen. This can cause cell oxidation and an uncontrolled increase in free radicals.

        Diet low in antioxidants

To lead a healthy life, it's very important to take care of your diet. To prevent cell oxidation, we recommend eating foods rich in antioxidants such as tomatoes, artichokes, carrots and dark chocolate.

        Environmental factors

Pollution, smoking, excessive sunshine, alcohol consumption and drug use are other causes of oxidative stress.

        Symptoms of oxidative stress

        Memory problems

Forgetfulness and memory loss are typical symptoms of people suffering from oxidative stress.

        Physical changes

Stiffer joints, loss of muscle strength and mobility problems.

        Cardiovascular problems

Cellular oxidation can cause arrhythmias and changes in blood pressure.

        Premature ageing

Wrinkles and spots appear on the dermis and the skin loses its usual lustre and elasticity.

        How to combat it?

        • A healthy, balanced diet - consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables.
        • Use of astaxanthin-based food supplementsvitamins, minerals and enzymes to prevent cell damage.
        • Exercise daily - it's important to lead an active lifestyle and avoid a sedentary lifestyle.
        • Avoid unhealthy habits such as smoking, alcohol consumption and excessive exposure to sunlight.
