However, microalgae biotechnology only began to develop in the middle of the last century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/algicel.pt\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Algicel - Biotechnology and Research<\/a>Lda, a company founded in 2007 on S\u00e3o Miguel Island in the Azores, has established a consortium with the University of the Azores to develop an R&amp;D project in microalgae cultivation. A pilot plant was built on an industrial scale to cultivate microalgae in closed photobioreactors. After three years of trials, the desired results were achieved. The process and equipment have been patented.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim of the company's founders is to provide happier lives and with Azora Astaxanthin, they are achieving this.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Algicel also has an interpretation centre, which is an information space dedicated to microalgae. It is accessible to anyone who wants to visit.
