Antioxidants improve the body's defences in winter

        by Beatriz Leite

In winter it's very common to hear the expression "having low defences", but what does that mean? In a nutshell, our body's immune system is weak and we are more exposed to viruses and bacteria. Flu, colds, bronchitis and respiratory infections are some examples of illnesses that start to appear in the population with the arrival of the first cold front. As well as the cold, the change in temperature also helps to lower the body's immunity. For this reason, as well as eating well, it's vital to consume antioxidants to improve our defence capacity.

        The main sources of antioxidants

Fruits, vegetables, whole grains and astaxanthin supplements contain large quantities and varieties of antioxidants. Among the main ones are:

        1. Ginger

Ginger contains a substance called gingerol, which regulates the immune system, protecting the body from autoimmune diseases. In addition, it has anti-inflammatory and thermogenic properties, thus reducing the potential spread of viruses and bacteria.

        2. Dark green vegetables

Eating rocket or spinach helps immune cells to mature, increasing the body's resistance to infections. The folic acid present in these foods participates in the formation of white blood cells, which are responsible for the body's defence.

        3. Green tea

It's one of the most widely consumed drinks in the world and one that helps the body's defences in winterThis is because it provides the body with a large amount of polyphenols, which have antioxidant properties.

        4. Garlic

It has an immunoprotective, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant function, helping to boost immunity by multiplying cells that fight infections.

        5. Astaxanthin

The benefits of astaxanthin in the body are numerous. Its daily consumption strengthens the immune system against external agents, creating a barrier that makes it difficult to spread diseases such as colds and flu by keeping cells healthy.

        6. Probiotics

Together with extracts of larch, zinc and selenium, they provide live lactic ferments, which contribute to boosting the immune system's defences.

        Other essential care

In addition to oxidants, to improve the body's defences in winter it's important to follow other healthy habits such as drinking plenty of water to keep the mucous membranes hydrated and thus prevent colds. Adjusting your clothing and protecting your extremities - head, hands and feet - is another key point.

Nor should we forget that a good night's sleep has a positive impact on the immune system. When the body gets the rest it needs, there is an increase in the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines, which are important in fighting infections.
